It’s a shame because Path of Neo really puts the PS2 through its paces in terms of physics-based environmental destruction, number of characters on screen, and visual effects. But Path of Neo is so close and yet so far, with enemy targeting consistently wonky, animations often going awry, a glacially slow combat pace. The two share a style of directing more than controlling your character, activating canned animations, and focusing on careful counters and positioning.

Then the ending plays out to Queen’s We Are The Champions, which must have cost to a bunch to license and makes for a very expensive joke. Gone is the fannying around the edges of the plot, instead plonking you in Neo’s boots and letting you experience his ascension from confused office worker to invincible martial arts technomessiah.Īt the same time it also seems to be a riposte to the disgruntled audiences who accused the Wachowskis of disappearing up their own arse with The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions. Path of Neo feels like a mea culpa from Shiny Entertainment after the mixed reception to Enter the Matrix. The Matrix: Path of Neo quickly proves that wrong. Apparently the logic behind you playing as side characters Niobe and Ghost in Enter the Matrix was that Neo is too powerful to be a fun video game character.
